Family Tree: Subway Map
Each family line traced by a different colour of "subway" line to represent the paths of four ancestral lines that merged in New York City. 18"x24" stretched linen graphic design, 50-person family tree
A wedding gift for a groom whose family history was relatively unknown. We started with the goal of making a family tree that featured his family and had a masculine feel to it. Initial genealogical research revealed that all four of his grandparents had moved from Europe, each to a different New York City borough. The theme of a network of subway lines was suggested by our graphic designer as a visual theme that wonderfully represented the city and the lines of connection between the areas of the city and the people within the family. The "subway system" was laid on top of an old map of the city that dated to a time when our client's grandparents were arriving in town.
